A life changing move for Monique & her family

Monique's parents were thrilled when they learned about Casa Capace’s new disability accommodation. Situated near their family residence, the newly built home offered the right combination of support and independent living, matched with a beautiful living environment.

Introducing Monique

Monique is a vibrant twenty-eight-year-old with an endearing, curious nature that captivates people around her. Throughout her life, Monique has been lovingly supported by her mother Deb, father Nicholas, and other devoted family members.

“Monique has NEXMIF disorder, which is a chromosomal condition and presents with Autism, Tourette’s & Epilepsy, a lack of speech and other behavioural issues,” shares her mum, Deb. She requires a high level of support to manage day-to-day life.

The search for a suitable home

While Monique was happy living at home, her parents' worried about her future. Deb was naturally concerned about what lay ahead when they were no longer around to care for her.

Aware of the lack of suitable disability accommodation in their area, Deb felt a growing sense of urgency. This is why she felt so optimistic when she learned about Northcott's collaboration with Casa Capace to develop new, purpose-built housing in nearby suburb, Gobbagombalin, in Wagga Wagga.

Their journey began at an information session about these properties. Afterwards, Deb remarked that for the first time, she felt hopeful that they had found a place where Monique could truly feel at home and receive the support she needed.

From Casa Capace’s perspective, Monique’s story speaks to our core purpose. We exist to impact peoples’ lives by providing exceptional and innovative homes for Australians’ with disabilities. These homes are the first of their kind in Wagga Wagga. Together with SIL providers like Northcott, we’re able to impact the lives of hundreds of people. Monique and her family are just the beginning.

Monique’s life in her new home

Monique, with the support of Northcott and Casa Capace, was able to get the NDIS funding she needed to move into the new Casa Capace home. She moved in in early 2023.

There was a transition period for Monique to settle in to her new home. Before her relocation, the Northcott support team extensively consulted with Deb to grasp Monique's unique communication cues and understand her needs thoroughly.

Her support worker, Will explains, "I absolutely adore working with Monique. She's incredibly bright. When Monique rubs her hands a certain way, we know she's craving a barbecue, and let me tell you, she's quite the barbecue enthusiast!"

Monique's passion for cooking drives her team to help her achieve greater independence in meal preparation.

A parent’s perspective

With Monique thriving in her independent living, Deb's role has shifted. While she continues to attend Monique's appointments and visit regularly, she relishes the newfound dynamic of their mother-daughter relationship.

"Though I'm no longer Monique's primary caregiver, our bond has deepened." reflects Deb.
